Surgical Treatment For Uterine Fibroids
Uterine Fibroid Embolization (UFE) is a non-surgical fibroid treatment that allows you to preserve your uterus. Since the procedure is done with a single “pinhole” incision, the recovery is much quicker generally lasting about 1-2 days. It does not require an overnight hospital stay. Obviously, it allows women to have pregnancies compared with hysterectomy.
While MINT specializes in non-surgical UFE, there are two main surgical treatments for Uterine fibroids: Myomectomy and Hysterectomy.
Myomectomy
Is the surgical removal of single or multiple fibroids without removing the uterus. This may be a good option for patients and may partially relieve or completely remove all symptoms. However, there are some fibroids that are not amenable to treatment with myomectomy because of their location or because they are too many. For such patients, the other surgical treatment is to remove the entire uterus (hysterectomy).
Uterine Fibroid Embolization (UFE) is non-surgical treatment that treats almost all types of fibroids which generally includes those that cannot be treated with myomectomy. In contrast to myomectomy, there are no surgical scars or other risks that can occur with surgery.
Hysterectomy
Is the surgical removal of the entire uterus! This is sure to alleviate any symptoms related to fibroids; however, it is not ideal for patients looking to keep their uterus or avoid major surgery. Unfortunately, recovery can take 1-2 months and like any surgery, can have serious complications.
